Cornwall Ontario – One of our area’s finest and most generous photographers snapped these amazing shots of some of our Wild Turkeys including a rare white Smoke Phase turkey!

Males

From Mr. Hanson:

The Wild Turkeys are struggling right now with the deeper snow that has hardened, and with the severe cold temperatures.  And, with the usual winter activities some of which come pretty close to flocks of Wild Turkeys, some flocks are moving to a different location.

I usually see anywhere from 8 to 12 flocks per day, varying in size……… in the fall I saw a flock of 83, but this is when the males were vying for dominance, fanning their tails and parading around with their wing feathers dropped to the ground, heads brilliant red………Now the flocks have settled down, some have stayed with the dominant male who won out in that flock, while others in the flock have followed another male and formed a new flock.

A girl looking for something to nibble on.

It’s amazing, some of the candid shots that Calvin Hanson captures through the lens of his camera!

When I first saw the animal it was swimming in the open water, and it did not have a fish.

It disappeared in the water and made an appearance about 4 minutes later, this time with a huge fish in its mouth.  It swam through the open water toward the edge of the ice, and it plunked the fish onto the ice and then it climbed onto the ice itself.

The fish was very much alive flipping and flopping.  The animal kept looking around, very proud of its catch, and rightly it should be.  The animal seemed to want to keep the fish alive as long as possible.  It took several minutes holding the fish by the head, by the body, and by the tail.  Although it held the fish’s head in its mouth several times, it did not bite down to kill the fish.

The animal started eating the fish tail first.  I suppose maybe to keep the fish alive.  The animal was soaked from swimming in the river and being a very cold day it didn’t take long for its coat and whiskers to turn to ice, and at that point it would take the fish and throw it back in the water, grabbing it and submerge both the fish and itself in the river for several minutes, then it resurfaced with the fish in its mouth, plunking the fish on the ice again and climbing on the ice to eat some more of it.  This ritual occurred 6 times.

Wouldn’t it be great to see a book of some of Mr. Hanson’s work? Post your comment here and ask him to put one together!

Death of a Goose Egg Near Ingleside Ontario 060419

Area photographer Calvin Hanson highlights the action he witnessed recently.

A gull raided a Goose nest from a small island in the St. Lawrence River near Ingleside, Ontario, Canada and flew off with one of the eggs.

The gull punctured the egg with its bill accidentally while it was flying and some of the residue inside the egg streamed down to the island below where the parent Goose was standing.

The gull had trouble keeping the large egg in its mouth, so it dropped the egg in the river, and immediately retrieved it, taking the egg back to the island about 10 feet from the original nest.

Along came an enormous male wild Mute Swan to the rescue who was swimming close to the island.  He realized something was wrong, so he climbed out of the river onto the island and stood over the egg guarding it; he sniffed it, he touched it gently with his bill, and stood over the egg for more than 30 minutes protecting it.

The Mute Swan was visibly upset that the egg had been stolen from a nest.

He then picked up nearby twigs as well as shoreline grasses and placed them close to the egg, as if to help the parent Geese rebuild a nest for the stolen egg.

The Mute Swan realized at that point there was nothing more he could do, and he ventured back into the river to continue swimming.
